So when you think of septic systems and sewage, you probably don’t think of a National Wildlife Refuge. Well in South Carolina, a passerby saw a hose coming from a tank disposing of sewage at the SC Fish and Wildlife Service Maintenance yard. Apparently with all the recent rain, the 21 year old septic system got swamped by groundwater and failed. The crew at the reserve called a company and had it pumped, but several hours later  it filled again, so the employees decided to go at it themselves  (with a portable pump) rather than call professionals. "Reddish yellow water" stood about a foot deep from the tank discharge to about 10-20 yards out and then flowed into a ditch. Quite a site on a wildlife refuge and habitat.

Septic tanks are supposed to be pumped by licensed companies and the sewage dumped at sewage treatment plants. There are fines for violations. Health inspectors are going to follow up with the wildlife refuge and as of right now, no actions have been taken. But if you need your septic tank pumped, don’t do what they did, call Northeast Sanitation instead!
