With all of this rain we’ve had lately, we’ve all been reminded of our septic systems. We don’t necessarily want to think about our septic systems, but when they fail us, we realize how much we take them for granted. Now that we all are reminded of how much we depend on a properly functioning septic, we should keep in mind some basic maintenance tips. When possible, and it hasn’t been possible lately, divert all excess water runoff away from your septic tank. Your gutters and down spouts should be directed away from your tank and your drain field. By allowing runoff to get into these areas we let the drain field become over saturated and then the system can’t properly treat the gray water it was meant to treat. Also, be sure all access lids and ports are sealed properly. If they are not, water can seep into the drain fields and tanks and overload your system. In pressure type systems, this can cause pumps to run constantly, wasting energy and money. Don’t flush anything other than waste and toilet tissues! This can be one of the most difficult rules to follow for many households. Septic systems are designed to treat organic matter only. Additionally, drain cleaner and some house hold cleaners can harm the needed bacteria in the tank which help with decomposition. But your septic system can be affected in the kitchen as well. In many cases the bacteria in septic systems can not dissolve undigested food solids. And, never pour grease or fat down the drain. Oils float on the water and can cause clogging and buildup.
